Rep. Matt Schaefer defends gun rights, the Second Amendment

Rep. Matt Schaefer
Rep. Matt Schaefer (R-Tyler) spoke at an event hosted by Grassroots America We The People in Tyler, Texas on Saturday. He praised the Second Amendment and our right to keep and bear arms. Rep. Schaefer stressed the need to help the mentally ill, rather than subvert our constitutionally-protected right to own and carry firearms. I was very disappointed that KLTV 7 News in Tyler did not even mention the fact that Rep. Schaefer was present. He made an excellent speech, which I was able to record and post for you to watch. It is Rep. Schaefer's whole speech, unedited from start to finish.

I would appreciate a dialogue on this issue. Please comment below regarding Rep. Schaefer's comments and take a second to vote in our poll about the meaning of the word "militia" in the Second Amendment.

  1. The only people who should have firearms are law enforcement and the military. As for protection, it is their responsibility to protect people. Why do citizens need to have weapons? It only endangers children and makes it more difficult to control crime.

  2. I have NEVER liked guns, was ALWAYS afraid of guns! I'm still not sure I could shoot one, just because. BUT, I TELL YOU ONE THING! If I had access to a gun, if someone should break into my home, OR threaten my "babies", you bet I would shoot them!! As of now, I don't plan to get a gun to carry around, BUT, I'm not going to say I never would, because circumstances could change my mind. The government does not have a right to take guns away from those who want them!! I just ask that those who have them, practice ALL of the safety rules, and BE SMART about guns!!! USE COMMON SENSE PEOPLE!!!!

    1. I think I can safely say a lot of folks are intimidated at the thought of a firearm. The trouble is, though, if someone wants to harm people, he will do whatever he must to harm others. If he can't use a gun, he'll use a knife or pretty much anything that can inflict pain. The problem is not with the weapon, it is with those who are mentally ill and/or have evil in their minds and hearts.
